THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team was unable to cool off the red hot Regals of Cal Lutheran University Saturday night as they fell 107-86 in Gilbert Arena.
Despite a 21-point performance from Priscilla Rodriguez (East Los Angeles, Calif.) and five players reaching double figures, Whittier (4-10, 1-4 SCIAC) was unable to stop the Regals quick start where they shot 77.8 percent from the field going 14-for-18 from the field in the first quarter.
Cal Lutheran continued with their hot shooting adding another 20 points in the second stanza to take a 54-40 lead into the break. They held the double digit lead through the second half outscoring the Purple & Gold 25-19 in the third quarter and 28-27 in the fourth en route to their sixth straight conference victory.
This marks the second highest point total surrendered by Whittier since the 2013-14 season when they fell 108-82 to Buena Vista (Il.).
Amia Thrash (Eastvale, Calif.) and Daniza Rodriguez (San Jose, Calif.) had big nights off the bench each chipping in with 13 points. Erica Houston (Stockton, Calif.) returned to the rotation and proved big inside with 10 points going 5-for-7 from the field in 12 minutes of action and Carly Buechler (Denver, CO) was the last Poet in double figures finishing with 12 points, while totaling six steals.
Whittier returns home this week as they host Occidental College, tomorrow, Tuesday, January 19 beginning at 7:30pm before playing host to Redlands this Saturday, January 23 beginning at 4:00pm.
