CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team picked up a much needed draw Wednesday evening as they finished tied 1-1 with Pomona-Pitzer on the road that snapped a two game losing skid.
Pomona-Pitzer has been right in the heart of a SCIAC Post Season Berth but with the draw both teams remain in contention. Whittier moves to 3-9-1, 2-8-1 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer drops to 7-5-2, 6-4-2 SCIAC.
The first half finished scoreless with just seven shots being taken. Whittier's Matteo Loi (Kirkland, WA) and Sergio Fuentes (Albuquerque, NM) got the Purple & Gold going with two shots early but both would miss high. These would be the only two added for WC in the first half as PP would go on to add five themselves. No saves were recorded in the first half from either goalie.
In the second half Pomona-Pitzer found the back of the goal in the 57th minute off the foot of Voja Maric who was found by Dylan DiGrazia. But this lead wouldn't hold as the Poets leading scorer James Suri (Lake Forest, Calif.) would add his sixth of the season being fed from the wing from Jacob Conlon (Placentia, Calif.). This would knot the game up at 1-1 and it would stay this way through two overtime periods despite Whittier getting off three shots in the extra time.
Jorge Rivas (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) picked up his second tie on the season finishing with two saves. Erik Dimas (Pomona, Calif.), Fuentes, and Suri each had two a shots a piece.
Whittier was outshot on the game 12-9 and was at a disadvantage on corner kicks at 6-1.
Whittier remains on the road for two more games. They take on Cal Lutheran University this Saturday, October 15 at 5:00pm before traveling to play Occidental College on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:00pm.
