CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team ended their 2016 campaign Saturday night as they fell 1-0 to Claremont-M-S.
Whittier ends the year 4-13-1, 3-12-1 SCIAC, while losing four of their last five with three being by just a goal.
The loss also marks the second time the Poets have lost to CMS this season by just a goal.
Despite being outshot 10-2 in the first half, Whittier was able to keep the game scoreless into the break. In the second half, the Purple & Gold came out firing on all cylinders outshooting CMS 9-6 but nothing would come of the opportunities. The Stags capitalized on a rebound in the 60th minute, which proved to be the game-winner.
Ian Shelton took a shot on frame, which was saved by Jorge Rivas (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.). The rebound would then find the foot of Ryan Karle who would put it away to the back of the net for the go ahead goal.
Whittier scrambled looking for the equalizer soon after with another seven shots but none would fall. The best look came in the 85th minute when Ricardo Pena (Bell Gardens, Calif.) had a clean look but his shot would hit the crossbar denying the Poets the game-tying goal.
Rivas finished with three saves between the posts, while Gonzalo Martinez Zorzi (Necochea, Argentina), Darren Holmes (Newcastle, UK), Pena, and Sergio Fuentes (Albuquerque, NM) would each record two shots.
