WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team was swept Saturday afternoon by the Bobcats of Bates College falling 8-5 at Memorial Field.
Both teams added runs in the first inning. Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) singled up the middle that got things started, stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Jake Raynaud (Los Gatos, Calif.) then stepped in and singled to center that brought in the first Poet run.
Whittier took a 2-1 lead in the fifth thanks to Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.). He doubled to left and then stole second. After stealing third, a throwing error by the catcher would allow him to score.
But this would be the last time Whittier would lead as Bates would come roaring back in the sixth putting up four runs on three hits, while capitalizing on two errors.
The Purple & Gold would get two back in the seventh with Raynaud singling through the left side that plated Max Morohashi (Encino, Calif.) and Mulrooney. But another three runs for the Bobcats over the last two innings would seal the victory despite Max Bradshaw (Salt Lake City, UT) singling in Raynaud in the ninth.
Nick Garcia (Anaheim, Calif.) earned the loss going 5.1 innings surrendering three earned runs on six hits.
Raynaud was 3-5 with a run scored and three RBI's and Dylan DeBrouwer (Manteca, Calif.) finished 3-5.
