WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College softball team used the long ball Saturday to double up Biola University at Palmer Field taking the twin bill 5-4 and 9-6.

Game 1

The first game of the doubleheader was a nail-biter with Whittier striking first in the bottom half of the third.  Ally Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) led things off with a walk.  Kalei Guillermo (Aiea, HI) moved her over with a bunt single to the right side and Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch.

Even with two outs, Whittier was able to bring a run across as Fonseca would come across on a wild pitch that put the Purple & Gold in front early.

Biola got on the scoreboard the very next inning with Madrid doubling down the left field line that plated Hall.  Whittier got two back in the bottom half of the frame to go back on top 3-1 after Fonseca singled down the left field line that scored both Erica Wendt and Kasey Whitney.  But that lead would soon be short-lived as the Eagles again scrapped their way back capitalizing on three Poet errors to tie the game up at 3-3 in the top half of the fifth.

In the sixth, the Poets would again add two. Megan Troutman (Covina, Calif.) doubled down the left field line and came around to score after Whitney reached on an error by the second baseman.  Natalie Sanchez would then step up and double to center that brought around Whitney and that would be enough for the win despite Biola adding one back in the bottom half of the seventh.

Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) got her second win on the season going a complete game giving up one earned run on five hits.  Whitney was 1-3 on the day with two runs scored.  Fonseca was 1-2 with a run scored and two runs batted in and Troutman was 1-2 with a run scored.
