WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team gave up 18 hits and six runs Wednesday afternoon as they fell 6-3 to Rutgers-Newark to close out their non-conference schedule.
The Poets drop to 5-15, 2-7 SCIAC and see their non-conference record drop to 3-8.
After the Scarlet-Raiders put up one in the top half of the first the Poets would respond with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning behind three doubles from Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.), Jake Raynaud (Los Gatos, Calif.), and Dylan DeBrouwer (Manteca, Calif.).
This lead would hold for the next three innings as Max Bradshaw (Salt lake City, UT) would throw 2.0 innings strong giving up one run on four hits. He left the game with the no decision. In the fifth, Rutgers-Newark would regain the lead putting up three runs on four hits, while capitalizing on two Poet errors.
They would extend their lead to 5-2 in the sixth following a triple from Billy Taylor. Raynaud would cut the deficit to two after a solo shot to left but that would be the last Poet run to come across as RNU would add an insurance run in the 8th en route to holding on for the three run victory.
Raynaud was 2-4 on the day with two runs scored and two runs batted in. DeBrouwer was 2-3 and Marcoe was 1-4 with a run scored.
Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) was tagged with the loss after going 7.0 innings giving up three earned runs on 14 hits.
Whittier has the weekend off and will begin preparations next week for La Verne when they open a three game series on Friday, March 25 beginning at 2:30pm on the road.
