WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team took the three game series with Pomona-Pitzer this weekend as they split with the Sagehens Saturday taking game one 8-4 before falling 10-7 in the second.
Head Coach Mike Rizzo a day after earning his 300th victory picked up his 301st as Whittier improved to 4-9, 2-4 SCIAC.
Game 1 (W, 8-4)
The Sagehens got on top with a two-spot in the bottom half of the first with an Omori double to left center. The Poets got one back in the top half of the third with Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) singling through the left side bringing across Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.).
WC would tie up the game in the sixth at 2-2. Jake Raynaud (Los Gatos, Calif.) doubled to left center and was brought in following a sacrifice fly from Dylan DeBrouwer (Manteca, Calif.).
Then in the eighth, the floodgates opened as Whittier brought in five runs on two hits. Raynaud doubled to left center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Max Bradshaw (Salt Lake City, UT) walked to put runners on the corners before stealing second and DeBrouwer walked to load the bases.
Hank Burditt (Granada Hills, Calif.) came in as a pinch hitter and walked that brought in one. Lamar then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and was followed by a Dmitri Washington (Peoria, AZ) groundout, which plated another. Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) then stepped in and ended the scoring effort with a single that scored the fifth Poet run.
In the bottom half of the frame, Pomona-Pitzer would get two runs back but it wouldn't be enough as DeBrouwer would double in Macey in the ninth that put the finishing touches on the Poets second straight victory.
Nick Garcia (Anaheim, Calif.) went the distance going a complete game giving up four runs on nine hits and struck out eight, picking up his first win on the season.
Raynaud went 3-4 on the day with two runs scored and Mulrooney and Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.) each recorded two hits apiece. Debrouwer was 1-2 with a run scored and two runs batted in with a walk.
Game 2 (L, 10-7)
Whittier kept the offense going in the second game putting up a quick three runs in the first. Macey singled to left that scored Mulrooney, Marcoe scored on a wild pitch, and DeBrouwer singled through the right side.
Pomona though got two back in the bottom half of the frame that cut the deficit to one. Whittier stayed in front adding another in the third and fourth. DeBrouwer reached on a throwing error by the third baseman allowing Macey to come across and Mulrooney reached on a fielder's choice that scored Lamar.
Trailing 5-4, Pomona would add the equalizer in the fifth with a solo shot coming from Tanner Nishioka. They would then take the lead 7-5 in the seventh with Morales singling to left that brought in a pair, but Whittier wouldn't go away bringing across two the very next inning with DeBrouwer and Andrew Fierro (Riverside, Calif.) combining for a single and double respectively. This before Lamar and Mulrooney would plate them both with a sacrifice fly and single through the right side.
But after this rally to tie the game, Pomona-Pitzer would take the momentum back putting up three runs in the bottom half of the inning with Simon Rosenbaum doubling down the left field line scoring Nishioka and Hinthorne before Rogan would double to left bringing the score to 10-7.
Tim Turpen (Chino Hills, Calif.) (0-1) picked up the loss going 1.2 innings giving up three runs on a hit. Macey was 4-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mulrooney was 3-5 with a run scored and two runs batted in and DeBrouwer was 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
