WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College softball team suffered a tough doubleheader loss to the University of La Verne Saturday falling 5-2 and 6-0 at Campus West.
With the sweep the Poets drop back to .500 on the season at 8-8 and 1-5 SCIAC.
Game 1 (L, 5-2)
La Verne got after Poet starter Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) adding three runs in the third and fourth innings to go ahead 3-0.
Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) put WC on the board with a two run shot in the fifth to pull WC within one but those would be the only runs to come across as Schif would homer to right bringing across a pair for ULV the very next inning securing the victory.
Whittier managed just three hits on the day from Whitney, Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.), and Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.). Blum earned the loss going 6.0 innings giving up five runs on 10 hits.
Game 2 (L, 6-0)
The offense struggled in game two again being held to just three hits. Sanchez, Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) and Ally Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) would record them and on the mound Rachel Alhanati (Lake Forest, Calif.) would pick up the loss going 4.1 innings giving up two runs on nine hits.
La Verne put up a three spot in the bottom half of the first and would tack on another three in the fifth and sixth en route to the shutout.
Whittier looks to bounce back this Saturday, March 12 as they travel to take on Chapman University beginning at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
