THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College baseball team threatened the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University Friday afternoon but couldn't hold a 2-0 lead falling 3-2 at George "Sparky" Anderson Field.
The game remained scoreless until the top half of the fifth when the Purple & Gold executed a hit-and-run to get runners at the corners with one out. Aided by a CLU error, the Poets were able to push across a pair of runs with Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.) and Andrew Fierro (Riverside, Calif.) both coming in.
But in the 6th and 7th innings, CLU would get those runs back with solo shots from Chad Clark and Gabriel Gunter that tied the game up at 2-2.
An inning later, Kingsmen Max Price was hit by a pitch and advanced 90 feet on a passed ball, which allowed him to come around for the game-winning run on a single by Clark.
Then in the ninth with two outs, Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) would reach on a single to right and would get into scoring position with a stolen base but would get stranded as Dylan DeBrouwer (Manteca, Calif.) would groundout to end the rally.
The Poets looked to Marcoe for a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a run while Mulrooney was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Freshman Tim Turpen (Chino Hills, Calif.) (0-3) was tagged with the loss after throwing a complete game.
