CLREMONT, Calif. – In a much needed sweep on Saturday, the Whittier College softball team came away with a split over the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer winning game one 8-2 before falling 4-3 in the second.
Whittier who is still seeking a spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post-Season Tournament is now 12-12, 4-8 SCIAC and currently sits in fifth place in the SCIAC Standings.
Game 1 (W, 8-2)
Despite trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Whittier bounced back to add two in the second and didn't look back. Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) hit a two-run blast in the second to put WC in top 2-1.
Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) homered in the fourth that moved the score to 3-1. Madison Crimi-Demichele (San Jose, Calif.) doubled to left that brought in two the very next inning and then stepped up with a big single in the seventh that brought in another long with a sacrifice fly from Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.).
Blum threw a complete game improving to 6-5 giving up an earned run on 11 hits, while striking out four. Crimi-Demichele finished 2-3 with three RBI's and Sanchez was 1-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Game 2 (L, 4-3)
Rachel Alhanati (Lake Forest, Calif.) got the start in game two but was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in the second inning, which proved the difference in the end.
Trailing 3-0 in the 5th, the Poets attempted to get back into the contest. Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) came up big with a double that scored Sarah Crawford (San Diego, Calif.) and Hailey Mollno (Glendora, Calif.) that cut the deficit to one.
They put together a rally in the seventh as Heal would drive in Whitney with a single but Kalei Guillermo (Aiea, HI) ran the Poets out of the comeback as she was tagged out trying to move to third.
Heal finished 2-3 with three RBI's. Crawford was 2-4 with a run scored and Whitney was 1-3 with a run scored.
Whittier returns to the diamond this Saturday, April 9 at Palmer Field for a doubleheader against Cal Lutheran University with game times set for 12:00pm and 2:30pm.
