CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a tough 13-1 loss in game one of the series, the Whittier College Baseball team bounced back in a huge way taking the doubleheader on Saturday over Claremont-M-S winning 11-1 and 10-5.
With the series, the Poets move into sole possession of fifth place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings at 14-21, 11-13 SCIAC and still have a chance to earn a berth into the SCIAC Post Season Tournament.
Game 1 (W, 11-1)
Whittier added runs in the first five innings dismissing the Stags in the 7th due to the ten run rule.
Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) hit a two run bomb in the first inning that put the Purple & Gold on top early.
That would be all Nick Garcia (Anaheim, Calif.) would need as he went a complete game giving up one run on seven hits, while striking out six.
Dmitri Washington (Peoria, AZ) added a huge single to left the very next inning that scored Dylan DeBrouwer (Manetca, Calif.) and Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.) and DeBrouwer would come up in the third with a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-0.
The Poets would add three runs in the fourth on five hits, which included a Macey single through the left side, a Jake Raynaud (Los Gatos, Calif.) double to left and a Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.) single to center.
Andrew Fierro (Riverside, Calif.) and Lamar would each single to end the inning both plating runs.
In the fifth, another three runs would come around to score again off the bat of Macey who hammered a three run shot that sealed the victory for Whittier.
Mulrooney finished 3-5 with two runs scored leading things off and Macey was a perfect 3-3 on the day with three runs scored and five runs batted in.
Game 2 (W, 10-5)
After a scoreless first inning Whittier struck for a run in the second and two in the third to go on top.
DeBrouwer continued swinging his hot bat with a single through the right side scoring Noah Garcia (Los Osos, Calif.) who reached earlier with a single through the left side.
In the second, Marcoe came through with a single scoring Mason Blansett (Lodi, Calif.) and Max Bradshaw (Salt Lake City, UT) would cap off the scoring with a double to center.
CMS finally got on the scoreboard with runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth but they still saw themselves trailing 4-3 after Garcia doubled to center in the fifth bringing across Raynaud.
That's as close as the Stags would get for the game as Whittier would put up a three spot in the seventh with Marcoe doubling to right field followed immediately by Bradshaw who homered putting the game out of reach.
CMS tried to make it a game with two runs in the eighth but WC would again come back strong with another three runs in the ninth with a Lamar double up the middle and a DeBrouwer single up the middle that iced the game.
Macey earned the victory going 5.2 innings giving up three runs on eight hits.
Marcoe was 3-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's. Bradshaw was 3-5 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, Lamar was 3-5 with a run scored and two RBI's and Garcia had his breakout game of his career finishing 2-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.
Whittier begins the four game round robin tournament this Saturday, April 30 as they host La Verne at 11:00am and Chapman University at 3:00pm.
