CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon to the top ranked Athenas of Claremont-M-S 3-0 and 9-0 being held to a combined six hits over two games.
Whittier now drops to 17-19, 9-15 SCIAC but still hold onto the No. 4 slot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings looking for yet another SCIAC Post Season Tournament Appearance.
Game 1 (L, 3-0)
Whittier was held to just one hit in game one coming from freshman Sarah Crawford (San Diego, Calif.).
Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) got the start and went a complete game giving up two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four. The problems came in the second and third for Blum.
One run came across in the second as CMS capitalized on a throwing error by shortstop Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.).
They then got their final two runs in the third led by Victoria Huynh who tripled that got things started and Katie Savard would single to center, while Briana Halle would score the second, while grounding into a double play.
Anna Gurr threw a gem on the other side throwing the one hitter, while Halle picked up the save.
Game 2 (L, 9-0)
Whittier again struggled to put runs up on the board in game two. The game lasted five innings as CMS would put up seven runs in the first two, which included a five spot in the second.
Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.), Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.), Ahern, Megan Troutman (Covina, Calif.), and Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) each recorded a hit.
Rachel Alhanati (Lake Forest, Calif.) got the start and lasted just 1.2 innings giving up seven runs on eight hits.
Whittier wraps up their regular season this weekend as they travel to take on Occidental College on Friday, April 29 with game times set for 2:00pm and 4:00pm before turning around to host Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, April 30 at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
