PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball team snapped their losing skid Friday as they swept the Beavers of the California Institute of Technology 25-16, 25-19, 25-19.
Whittier grabs their first conference win as they move to 3-10, 1-3 SCIAC, while Caltech drops to 1-5, 0-2 SCIAC.
The Purple & Gold hit .207 as a team with all 18 players finding playing time. Olive Anagu (Culver City, Calif.) led the attack with Rebecca Slattery (Los Altos, Calif.) out and finished with eight kills coupled with seven digs.
Kyriaki Tsigkounis (Rialto, Calif.) put together a strong two sets posting five kills on 14 attempts for a .214 hitting percentage, while freshman Alaina Rhee (Kent, WA) posted the same but was 5-6 for a career high .833 hitting percentage.
Freshman Camryn Purdom (Moreno Valley, Calif.) finished with 11 assists and six digs, while Clarissa Standafer (Alta Loma, Calif.) totaled 11 digs in the backrow.
Whittier hit .345 in the first set and used a 9-0 run midway through the frame to go in front 22-10 and they never looked back as they would go on to post runs of eight straight and six straight in the next two sets that gave them separation.
Whittier returns home to the Graham Athletic Center next Tuesday, September 27 as they host Redlands beginning at 7:00pm.
