WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team dominated the competition Saturday evening as they cruised past the University of La Verne 66-46 inside of the Graham Athletic Center.

With the win the Poets improve to 4-11, 3-3 SCIAC and move into 6th place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

The Purple & Gold put on a show in front of a crowd of almost 500 strong shooting 42% from the field with nine of ten players added points on the squad.

Nine straight for the Poets opened the first quarter with jumpers from Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) and Emily Underwood (Nicholasville, KY), while Cubel would drain a triple capped off with a layup from Ana Youngblood (Berkeley, Calif.).

They would continue to roll from there outscoring La Verne 27-12 in the frame and then 17-10 in the second to take a 44-22 lead into intermission.    In the third it became worse as the deficit became 30 as Daniza Rodriguez (San Jose, Calif.) heated up adding six, which included a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe, while playing nine of the ten minutes.

In the fourth, La Verne attempted a comeback outscoring WC 15-6 but the damage was already done as Whittier would roll to the lopsided victory.

Underwood finished with 10 points and had five boards and four assists.  Emilee Dy (Chino Hills, Calif.) added 10 points off the bench, while Carly Buechler (Greenwood Village, CO) just missed a double double by a point with nine points and a game high 12 rebounds.

Cubel despite missing double digits added nine points and was 4-of-8 from the field.  Rodriguez finished with eight points and eight boards, while Youngblood was big in the paint all night posting six points and nine boards.

A nice addition to the game was Margo Campos (Norwalk, Calif.) who found herself in the game for four minutes and knocked down a triple, while grabbing a steal and a rebound.

Whittier hits the road for two games next week beginning with a big match-up against the University of Redlands on Wednesday, January 18 beginning at 7:00pm before traveling to Chapman University on Saturday for a game against the first place Panthers with game time set for 5:00pm.
