PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball team wrapped up the clean sweep on the season over the California Institute of Technology 25-16, 25-8, 25-15.
The Poets currently sit in 2nd place within the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings at 18-7, 10-4 SCIAC and have now won seven of their last eight.
Head Coach Chris Duarte McDermott used 16 different players led by Makenzie Thieme (Corona, Calif.) who posted 16 kills on 30 attempts, hitting a season high .433.
Ashley Whittall (Norwalk, Calif.) added seven kills with eight digs, while Camryn Purdom (Moreno Valley, Calif.) registered 19 assists with a couple kills and six digs. In the backrow, Clarissa Standafer (Alta Loma, Calif.) totaled 12 digs with two service aces.
After getting a minor test in the first set, Whittier rolled in the second hitting .242 and using an early 13-1 run that gave them a 13-2 lead behind strong serving from Standafer and four consecutive kills by Thieme and Abby Salmon (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.).
Then to cap off the frame, the Purple & Gold finished with six of seven as Hannah Joyce (Newport Beach, Calif.) put on a serving clinic to put the Beavers in a hole 2-0.
In the third, Whittier kept the attack going hitting .300. CIT tried to stay close at 8-8 but an ensuing 9-2 run by WC would move the score to 17-10, which they would hold as Salmon would serve out the frame with five straight, which included two aces.
Whittier returns home this Friday, October 27 as they host Claremont-M-S beginning at 7:00pm.
