WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball team saw their Senior Night spoiled Friday evening as they dropped a straight sets decision to Claremont-M-S 25-21, 25-18, 25-23.
Whittier remains in 2nd place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings at 18-8, 10-5 SCIAC.
The Purple & Gold battled all night and tested the No. 7 ranked Athenas staying close in every frame but couldn't grab a set as they fell in three.
Prior to the game six seniors were recognized including McKenzie Rosendale, Sydney Underwood, Erika Click (Willows, Calif.), Alexis Mills (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Clarissa Standafer (Alta Loma, Calif.), and Dominique Almuena (La Mirada, Calif.).
Freshman Ashley Whittall was the lone Poet in double figures finishing with 13 kills and nine digs but also added a career high six block assists. Makenzie Thieme (Corona, Calif.) added seven kills and Mills chipped in with five kills on 10 attempts for a .300 hitting percentage along with a career high eight blocks assists.
Whittier added a program high 21 blocks in the game against the big front line of CMS.
Camryn Purdom (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Hannah Joyce (Newport Beach, Calif.) added 17 and 11 assists, each respectively while Standafer put up 13 digs.
Whittier wraps up their regular season today at 2:00pm as they take on La Verne with playoff implications on the line.
