CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Basketball team remains in a slump as they extended their losing skid to six games following a tough 81-60 loss to Pomona-Pitzer.
Pomona-Pitzer came out firing on all cylinders as they connected on six of their first nine baskets, while going 5-of-8 from behind the arc to jump out to an early 19-4 lead.
Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) ended the run with a three-pointer at the 13:24 mark but another seven straight by the Sagehens would move the score to 26-7. Louis Kurihara (Culver City, Calif.) and Chris Kapano (Los Alamitos, Calif.) added a three-pointer and jumper soon after that got them within 15 but an ensuing 9-1 run by PP would again extend the lead back to over 20.
Potthoff and Anthony Martinez (Cerritos, Calif.) added a couple layups to try and get some offense going for the Poets but it wasn't enough as nine unanswered by the Sagehens would give them a 47-19 lead at the break.
Whittier came out in the second half and played very well offensively outscoring the Sagehens 41-34, shooting 38% from the field, while getting 11 points from Kurihara who finished with 14 for the game. The Poets slowly chipped away getting within twenty at the 9:20 mark but the deficit was too much to over come as they would fall on the road by 21.
Kapano registered 13 points for the game with four boards on 4-of-9 shooting. Potthoff added 12 points and Jordan Lingard (DU, Australia) would add seven.
Whittier returns home for two games this week. They host Chapman University Thursday, February 16 beginning at 7:00pm and then Redlands on Saturday, February 18 (7:00pm).
