LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College Baseball team dropped their three game series with Occidental over the weekend.  After a tough loss in game one where they blew a 6-0 lead, the Purple & Gold came out and fell 6-4 and 7-1 in a doubleheader moving their record to 2-5.

Game 1 (L, 6-4)

Whittier took a quick lead following their opening at bats. Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) led things off with a single to right field and was then moved over by Dmitri Washington (Peoria, AZ) before coming in on a groundout by Jake Raynaud (Los Gatos, Calif.).

Oxy then struck for four over the next two innings that put them on top but then saw Whittier come back with a pair in the 4th coming on two hits and a couple fielders choices sparked by a Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) double to right field.

The Poets trailed 4-3 into the 7th when the Tigers would tack on another two.  They would get one back in the 8th with Steven Castro (Long Beach, Calif.) singling to right, which drove in Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.) but that would be the final run that would come across as Oxy would hold on for the two run victory.

Mulrooney finished 3-4 with a run scored, while Marcoe was 2-4 scoring twice.  Macey, Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.), and Castro were each 1-4.

Justin Ushio (Mililani, HI) went 6.0 innings and gave up five runs on four hits but struck out six as he drops to 1-1.

Game 2 (L, 7-1)

In the second game despite having nine hits couldn't bring runs across.  The Poets were put in an early hole as Oxy would go on top 7-0 over the first four innings.  The Purple & Gold relief staff would hold them scoreless over the final four innings but it wouldn't be enough as Whittier would add a mere one run coming in the 7th when Macey doubled to right driving in Mulrooney.

Macey finished 3-4 with an RBI, while Lamar was 2-4.

Dante Mancia (La Mirada, Calif.) picked up the loss going just 1.1 innings giving up six runs on eight hits.

Whittier hosts Bates today, Tuesday, February 21 beginning at 2:30pm before taking on the University of Redlands this weekend Feb. 24-25 in a three game series.
