LA VERNE, Calif. – First year Head Coach Roy Dow completed his first season at the helm of the Whittier College Women's Basketball program and ended the 2016-17 season in impressive fashion edging the University of La Verne 76-66 on the road, spoiling their senior night.
The win marks the second in a row for the Purple & Gold as they finish 9-16, 8-8 SCIAC, while finishing 6th in the final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Standings. They also swept La Verne, Pomona-Pitzer and Caltech on the season, while splitting with Redlands and Occidental.
The Poets found themselves in an early hole as ULV scored the first 10 points, while holding Whittier scoreless over the first six minutes. But a big second quarter where they shot 58% from the field, while going 6-of-8 from long range and adding 29 points gave WC a lead 44-35 at the break.
Emily Underwood (Nicholasville, KY) and Emilee Dy (Chino Hills, Calif.) added two triples to get the third quarter off and running. A 6-0 spurt by ULV would trim the Poet lead to five with 1:00 to play but that's as close as they would get as Whittier would open up the fourth with back to back three-pointers from Carly Buechler (Greenwood Village, CO) and Underwood, while Ana Youngblood (Berkeley, Calif.) added a couple layups, which opened up the lead to 13.
Underwood led the Poets with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Dy scored 14 points off the bench, Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) had 12 and Buechler finished with 10.
Whittier shot 43% from the field and was 44% from behind the arc. Despite being outrebounded 48-40, earned 12 points off turnovers and had 30 points in the paint.
