WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team continues to seek their second sweep on the season as Chapman University was able to come in and spoil as they split the twin bill.
The Purple & Gold fell 3-2 in a tight game one but was able to bounce back and find their bats in the second winning 8-2.
Game 1 (L, 3-2)
All five runs were unearned in the first game. Whittier struck first in the bottom half of the first inning as Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) would drive in Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.) with a single to right field.
This lead would hold until the 5th when the Panthers would add a two spot capitalizing on three Poet errors. They added another the very next inning, which would be the eventual game winner as Foisy would come around due to another error on an inside the park homerun.
Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) would add a single to right in the 7th that would score Madison Crimi-Demichele (San Jose, Calif.) that cut the deficit to one but the rally would be cut short and the game tying run stranded as CU would hold on for the one run victory.
Sanchez finished 3-4 with an RBI. Brianna Alvarez (Montebello, Calif.) was 2-3 and Garza was 1-2 with a run batted in.
Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) fell unlucky picking up the loss after going a complete game giving up one earned run with three strikeouts.
Game 2 (W, 8-2)
The Poets bounced back in a big way in the second game and controlled from start to finish. They jump started their bats in the 1st inning with Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) driving in Alvarez and Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) doubling to right center that brought in another.
Chapman pulled within one in the 3rd but that's as close as they would get as the Purple & Gold would add a four spot in the 5th that opened the game up. Rodriguez grounded out, which plated one, Whitney reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed another to score and Ahern capped it off with a two run shot.
Whitney and Ahern singled in another two insurance runs the very next inning and despite CU tacking on another in the 7th, it wouldn't be enough as Whittier would pull off the split.
Annika Seedborg (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) pitched lights out going a complete game giving up two runs on 10 hits, while striking out four as she picks up her fourth win on the season.
Ahern finished 3-4 with a run scored and four runs batted in. Whitney was 2-4 scoring twice with three RBI's.
