WHITTIER, Calif. – Both games on the doubleheader Saturday ended in the 6th inning as Claremont-M-S and Whittier split on the afternoon at Palmer Field.
The Poets and Athenas end the regular season splitting at 2-2. The Purple & Gold improve to 17-19, 13-11 SCIAC and still sit in 3rd Place in the SCIAC Standings.
Game 1 (L, 8-0)
Anna Gurr for the second time this season shut the Poets out in game one giving up three hits in a complete game win. The three hits came from Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.), Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.), and Kalei Guillermo (Aiea, HI). Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) was matched up against her on the mound but was touched for eight runs on 12 hits in just 5.2 innings.
Game 2 (W, 8-0)
With Gurr off the mound in game two the Poets got their bats going and forced the Athenas to use four pitchers as they rolled to the 8-0 victory.
Annika Seedborg (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) pitched a gem going a complete game shutout surrendering just two hits in her best start of the season.
The Poets tagged CMS for seven runs over the first three innings before forcing the game into stoppage in the 6th with the run rule being in affect.
Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) who continues to swing a hot bat got the Poets on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the 1st with a two run shot to right center. Ally Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and Guillermo tacked on the ensuing two runs in the 2nd with a single up the middle and a groundout on the infield.
Then in the 3rd, the game was opened up as Whittier added another three runs on three hits. Sanchez singled in the first run through the left side, Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) drove in Dani Rozhon (Apple Valley, Calif.) with a sacrifice fly and Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) capped off the frame with a double to center.
The final blow came in the 6th as Whittier brought in an insurance tally that forced the game to be called. After a quick two outs, Whitney doubled to center before moving over on a wild pitch. The bases got loaded soon after following Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) and Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) drawing walks and Garza ended the game with her own base on balls.
Whitney led the offense going 2-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Wishner was 2-3 scoring once and an RBI and Garza was 1-1 with a run scored, two RBI's and a walk.
Whittier remains at home this Friday, April 28 for Senior Day as they host the University of La Verne with game times set for 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
