PASADENA, Calif. – The Beavers of Caltech proved no match for the Poet Baseball team over the weekend as Whittier came away with the series taking the twin bill 1-0 and 15-3.

Whittier has now won five straight and improve to 22-12, 9-9 SCIAC and continue to move up in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rankings sitting 5th.

Game 1 (W, 1-0)

It was a pitcher's dual in game one with Tim Turpen (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Jonah Krop going at it.  Turpen, Royce Komesu (Kailua, HI) and Justin Ushio (Mililani, HI) combined for the shutout.  Turpen went 7.0 innings strong giving up six hits along, while striking out nine as he improves to 4-0 on the season.  Komesu threw a perfect 8th and Ushio completed his fifth save on the season going a perfect 9th.

The lone run of the game came in the 6th for the Purple & Gold.  Daniel Tuerffs (Yorba Linda, Calif.) led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second following a sacrifice bunt from Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.).  A fly out from Michael Angulo (Sunnyvale, Calif.) would move Tuerffs up to third and he would then come in following an error by the shortstop.

Whittier only collected five hits for the game with Macey going 2-2 and Tuerffs going 1-3 with a run scored.

Game 2 (W, 15-3 – 7 Innings)

The final game of the series was an offensive rout by the Poets pouring on 15 runs on 13 hits.  They put up four in the top half of the 1st thanks to Macey who plated a three-run shot to left center.  They added another three in the 4th behind an Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.) sacrifice fly and a Tuerffs triple to right center that moved the score to 7-0 and from there they kept the momentum.

The 7th was the turning point in the game where the Poets put the game away plating seven runs on five hits.  Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) led off the inning with a single, Steven Castro (Long Beach, Calif.) doubled down the left field line scoring two and Macey, Mulrooney, and Blansett would end the big frame with back-to-back-to-back singles.

Dante Mancia (La Mirada, Calif.) threw a complete game going 7.0 innings giving up three runs on eight hits improving to 2-2.  Tuerffs finished 3-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in.  Macey was 3-5 with two runs scored and a career high six RBI's and Mulrooney was 3-4 scoring twice and driving in another.  Other contributors included Castro going 1-2 with two runs scored and two RBI's and Jarryd Samsing (Buckeye, AZ) going 1-2 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.

Whittier begins a three game series next weekend with Claremont-M-S on Friday-Saturday, April 20-21.  The single game on Friday is on the road and the doubleheader will be on Saturday at Hugh B. Mendez Stadium with game times set for 11:00am and 2:00pm.  This will also be the Poets senior Day, which will take place prior to game one.
