WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Baseball team picked up the series against the University of Redlands Saturday splitting the doubleheader at Hugh B. Mendez Stadium.

The Purple & Gold won game one 2-0 but dropped the afternoon match-up 8-1.  They move to .500 on the season at 2-2, 2-1 SCIAC.

Game 1 (W, 2-0)

Tim Turpen (Chino Hills, Calif.) was the story line in game one throwing 7.1 innings strong surrendering just two hits with three strikeouts as he collected his first win of 2019.  Justin Kottinger (Stockton, Calif.), Andrew Chavez (West Covina, Calif.), and Joey Hanley (Chicago, Ill.) threw the final 1.2 frames scoreless giving up just one hit, with Hanley picking up the save.

For Redlands, Andrew Rueter threw a complete game giving up two runs on five hits, with one of the hits being a costly two-run blast in the 5th over the right field fence by freshman Kellen Ward (Montgomery, AL).

Ward finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI's.

Game 2 (L, 8-1)

The second game of the doubleheader was scoreless over the first four innings.  Whittier added their only run in the bottom half of the 5th off the bat of Dane Goodman (Ross, Calif.) who sacrificed in Ward, who reached earlier with a walk.  But after that it was all Redlands putting up eight over the final four innings.

Freshman Austin Correia (San Diego, Calif.) was handed his first loss going 5.2 innings giving up three runs on six hits.  Nick Krska (Happy Valley, OR), Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.), Jacob DeLongchamp (Beaumont, Calif.), and Mason Blansett (Lodi, Calif.) each recorded base knocks.

Whittier returns to the diamond next Sunday, March 3 when they return to non-conference play when they host Drew University for a doubleheader at 11:00am and 2:30pm.
