FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Whittier College Baseball team came away with a sweep Friday over Pacific University pulling out both decisions 4-3.
The Purple & Gold are now 3-1 on their Spring Break trip and improve to 9-8, 2-4 SCIAC.
The Poets withstood a pair of late rallies by the host Boxers to come away with the doubleheader sweep. In game one, Whittier got a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth. In the night cap, they also escaped a late rally in the bottom of the 12th inning, scooping up a line drive off the turf with the tying run at third and winning run at second.
Game 1 (W, 4-3)
Whittier scored three times in the 2nd inning for an early lead. Dane Goodman (Ross, Calif.) started things off with a single to center before stealing second. Jarryd Samsing (Buckeye, AZ) then reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Goodman to score and Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) kept the two-out rally going with a single to right field. After that Daniel Tuerffs (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made his presence felt doubling to left field that plated two.
This lead held until the 5th inning when the Boxers finally got on the scoreboard with a double down the right field line from Jacob Igawa. Whitter got what proved to be the winning run in the 7th on a two-out RBI single by Nick Krska (Happy Valley, OR), who brought in Samsing, who doubled to start the inning. For Krska, it was his second hit of the game and Goodman also had two hits to lead a Poets' squad that had eight hits in the win.
Alex Baez (Chino Hills, Calif.) finished the day, scattering six hits and striking out eight to raise his record to 4-2 for Whittier. Pacific starter Casey Brown allowed seven hits and struck out six in the loss to fall to 4-1.
Tuerffs finished 1-for-4 with two RBI's. Goodman was 2-for-3 scoring once and Samsing was 1-for-4 scoring twice and driving in another.
Game (W, 4-3; 12-Innings)
The nightcap saw the two teams combine for 22 hits, leave 28 runners on base and use seven-different pitchers before it was decided in the 12th inning. An unearned run by the Poets was the difference.
Whittier struck first in the 2nd with John Vuz (Blairstown, NJ) driving in Jacob Bauer (Pleasanton, Calif.) who started things off with a single to center. Pacific tied things up in the 5th but again WC was able to go back on top in the 6th with Samsing singling to the shortstop, which allowed Bauer to come in and score.
The Boxers put together a rally in the 7th and 8th to tie things up another two times but in the 12th the Poets capitalized on a costly error by the shortstop. Goodman started off the inning getting hit by a pitch and was then sacrificed over by Vuz. Samsing then went down swinging putting two outs on the board. But the Boxers couldn't get out of it as Mulrooney would reach on a shortstop miscue, which allowed Goodman to come in and score.
Krska, Mason Blansett (Lodi, Calif.), and Bauer were each 2-for-6. Bauer also scored twice. Vuz was 1-for-5 with two RBI's and Goodman added a pinch hit single, while coming around to score twice.
Freshman Joey Hanley (Chicago, Ill.) went the final two innings of scoreless relief to lock in his first win of the season.
The series will continue today, Saturday, March 23 with another doubleheader. First pitch at Chuck Bafaro Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
