WHITTIER, Calif. – For the second time this season the Whittier College Softball team was swept at Palmer Field falling 2-0 and 5-2 to Williams College Friday afternoon ending their non-conference schedule.

The Purple & Gold now drop to 8-10-1, 5-5 SCIAC, while Williams improves to 5-3.

Game 1 (L, 2-0)

The Ephs threw a shutout in game one with Rebecca Duncan going a complete game giving up just three hits.  She also recorded nine strikeouts as she improved to 2-2.  Sophomore Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) had a strong performance in the circle for the Poets coming back from injury and throwing 5.0 innings giving up just one earned run on three hits to go with four strikeouts.  She unfortunately was tagged with the loss dropping to 2-1.

The three hits recorded for Whittier came from Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) who had two, which included a double and Naomi Martinez (Marina Del Rey, Calif.) who added a pinch hit single.  Others who reached base safely were Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) and Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) drawing walks.

Game 2 (L, 5-2)

Whittier got some offense going in the second game with two runs on seven hits.  They got one in the bottom half of the 1st with Attaway singling up the middle scoring MaGee, who reached earlier with a walk.  They added their second in the 3rd this time with Martinez flying out to left field, which was deep enough to score Whitney.

But this would be the only offense generated as the Ephs would put up a pair of runs in the 4th and 5th, which would move the score to 5-2.

Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) was charged with the loss going 4.2 innings giving up four earned runs on seven hits.  She also had three strikeouts.  She drops to 5-4.

Ashlei Sanchez (San Dimas, Calif.) led the offense going 2-for-3.  Whitney was 1-for-2 scoring once and Attaway and Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) were each 1-for-1.

Whittier returns to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play tomorrow, Saturday, March 23 when they travel to take on Claremont-M-S with game times set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
