CLAREMONT, Calif. – Coming off a solid road win against the University of Redlands, the Whittier College Men's Soccer team looked to make it two in a row against an undefeated Claremont-M-S squad.
But after 90:00 minutes the Purple & Gold would fall on a first-half goal, which would stand as the eventual game-winner. Whittier drops back to .500 at 3-3, 2-1 SCIAC, while Claremont-M-S improves to 6-2, 3-0 SCIAC.
It was anybody's game throughout, with CMS holding the slight edge on shots 13-8, while collecting seven corner kicks to Whittier's one. The only goal of the game came in the 28th minute from Ethan Tyng. Samay Rahim received the ball on the left side of the penalty area and sent a short pass to the right to Tyng, who buried the shot inside the left post giving CMS a 1-0 lead.
Whittier had an early look on frame from Alejandro Trujillo (Buena Park, Calif.), who added the game-winner against the Bulldogs. But his header back post would get stopped by Eduardo DeAnda. Coming out of the break WC picked up the tempo getting two good looks off from RayRay Roberson (Albuquerque, NM) and Matteo Loi (Kirkland, WA), but both would miss high and wide. Four minutes later Trujillo got another look this time off a nice feed from on top of the box but his look would also go high. The last attempt came from Loi in the 82nd minute but his attempt would just miss over the crossbar allowing CMS to hold on for the victory.
The Stags had opportunities to add to their lead in the final 20:00 minutes but sophomore goalie Teddy Nickerson (Seattle, WA) was able to come up with two diving stops that kept it a one-goal deficit. He finished with six saves against seven shots.
Whittier remains on the road this Saturday, September 28 to wrap up the month. They travel to Occidental College with gametime set for 7:00pm.
