REDLANDS, Calif. – It was a tough weekend for the Whittier College Baseball team who was supposed to play the University of Redlands in a doubleheader on Saturday. But due to inclement weather and four rain delays could only get in one game being forced to come back Sunday to complete the three game series.
The Purple & Gold fell in both games 12-3 and 7-4 and have now dropped five in a row moving to 2-6, 0-3 SCIAC.
Game 1 (L, 12-3)
Once again a game was decided due to one inning, which came in the opening at-bats for Redlands who got after Poet starter Austin Correia (San Diego, Calif.) who gave up nine runs on seven hits. He lasted just 3.0 innings as he was charged with the loss dropping to 0-1 on the season.
Whittier got two of those runs back in the 3rd with Jacob Bauer (Pleasanton, Calif.) coming up clutch with a two-out bases loaded double down the left field line that scored Justin Ryan (Riverside, Calif.) and Alexander Jelloian. The Purple & Gold tacked on another in the 6th off the bat of Dane Goodman (Ross, Calif.) who went yard to left center. But this would be the last offense generated for WC as they would go down in order in each of the next three innings.
Goodman had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Bauer was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and Jelloian was 1-for-2 scoring once.
Game 2 (L, 7-4)
The Poets faired better on Sunday coming back to Redlands to complete the series, but couldn't pull off the win as they fell 7-4 despite UR playing a morning game against Whitworth.
Whittier jumped out in front with a run in their opening at-bats capitalizing on an error by the UR pitcher. Ryan started things off with a single to left and moved up to second following a sacrifice bunt from Jelloian. Goodman then put runners on the corners with a single to center and Bauer then loaded the bases with a walk. After Ryan came home on an error by the pitcher, Jarryd Samsing (Buckeye, AZ) then came up clutch with a single to right, but unfortunately he couldn't get an RBI as Goodman was gunned down trying to score.
The very next inning Redlands went ahead with two runs, but that lead soon diminished, as Whittier's Mike Hernandez (Stockton, Calif.) would go yard with a two-run shot that moved the score to 3-2. In the 4th, Redlands rallied with a three-spot on four hits getting a double from Walsh and a single from Acosta that swung the momentum and the Bulldogs would carry it as they would add insurance runs in the 6th and 8th.
Trailing 7-3 in the 9th the Poets would put together a late rally bringing across one thanks to a Goodman sacrifice fly that scored Devon Robinson (Soquel, Calif.), but that's all WC could get as a pop out and fly-out would end the threat.
Alex Escobar (Brea, Calif.) got the start for the Poets throwing 3.2 Innings giving up five runs on seven hits. He was charged with the loss. He was relieved by Devin Duran (Fremont, Calif.) who went the next 4.0 Innings surrendering two runs on five hits.
Goodman finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Bauer was 2-for-4 scoring once and Hernandez was 1-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of RBI's.
Whittier returns to the diamond this Thursday, February 27 when they host Kalamazoo beginning at 2:30pm.
