WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Friday with Claremont-M-S but couldn't get their offense going as they fell 11-3.
The Purple & Gold ended 2019 beating the Athenas five times in a row but in the 2020 SCIAC Opener CMS got their revenge putting up 11 runs on 18 hits. Whittier kept it a one-run game through three innings but couldn't maintain it as CMS would put up three runs in the 4th and 5th innings that opened the game up.
CMS took advantage of a WC error in the top half of the 1st bringing across three runs on three hits, which included a two-out triple from Scanlan. In the bottom half of the frame though Whittier responded with a leadoff solo shot from Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) to deep left. Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) then beat out a throw on the infield that kept the rally going and Hannah Angileri (San Jose, Calif.) would drive her in two batters later with a single down the right field line.
Trailing 6-2 in the 4th Whittier would add another run this time using a CMS error. Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) started things off with a single up the middle. Sofia Paniagua (Glendora, Calif.) then came in as a pinch runner and made the most of her substitution stealing both second and third before coming in on a two out error by the third baseman. This though would be the last run that would come across as the Athenas would hold WC scoreless over the next three innings.
Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) threw 3.2 Innings giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits. She was charged with the loss dropping to 1-2 on the season.
MaGee finished 2-for-4 scoring once. Ha was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and Angileri was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
