ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Basketball team tried to act as spoiler for the Chapman University Senior Day Saturday but couldn't get their offense going as they were held to their lowest offensive output on the season falling 75-56.
Whittier has now dropped five of their last six and move to 10-11, 5-7 SCIAC. They now sit two games back of 4th place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.
Chapman jumped out in front quickly 23-13. But this lead was soon cut as Whittier put together their own run of seven straight behind a pair of layups from Kenyatta Louder (Compton, Calif.) and Ahmad Young (Sunnyvale, Calif.), capped off with a triple from Young that made it a three-point game. But after that CU took over scoring 24 straight points as they held Whittier scoreless over the next seven minutes, while taking a 49-27 lead into the break.
The lead moved to 30 early in the second half. Whittier tried to create some pushback with a small run trying to make things interesting, but could only get within 15 late.
Whittier shot 40% from the field and 35% from three-point territory. They were outrebounded 41-33 but added 24 points in the paint, while getting 20 points off the bench.
Louder led the Purple & Gold with 14 points to go with five boards and a pair of assists. Nick Colosi (La Mirada, Calif.) came off the bench to add a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) and Young each added 10 points apiece, while combining for five assists and five rebounds.
Whittier has a bye this Wednesday but will return to the court next Saturday, February 15 when they host Occidental College beginning at 2:00pm.
