WHITTIER, Calif. – It has been a long weekend for the Whittier College Baseball team playing four games in three days. Sunday they ended their homestand with an 8-4 loss to Lewis & Clark University.
Whittier ends their four game stretch going 2-2 to start 2020.
For the third game the Poets found themselves trailing after the 1st inning this time giving up three runs on two hits as Lewis & Clark got after WC starter Devin Duran (Fremont, Calif.) who picked up the loss. Dante Mancia (La Mirada, Calif.) came in relief and he pitched well striking out the first two batters he faced before throwing the next 3.1 innings.
The Pioneers tacked on their 4th run the very next inning with a two out single coming from Thomson through the right side. Whittier got two back in the bottom half of the 2nd to cut the deficit in half. Mike Hernandez (Stockton, Calif.) started things off with a triple to left center and Alex Jelloian (Chatsworth, Calif.) drove him in with a single through the right side. Freshman Troy Grossman (Oceanside, Calif.) then singled up the middle and Jarryd Samsing (Buckeye, AZ) then loaded the bases reaching on an error by the shortstop. The very next batter was Devon Robinson (Soquel, Calif.) who was hit by a pitch that scored the second run.
L&C added insurance in the 4th and 5th Innings moving the score to 8-2. Whittier got one back in the bottom half of the 5th with Justin Ryan (Riverside, Calif.) tripling down the right field line before being brought in by a Dane Goodman (Ross, Calif.) single on the infield. The Poets would then keep the Pios scoreless over the next four innings allowing them to make a comeback, but the only run WC was able to get came in the 8th as Logan Brett (Rossmoor, Calif.) singled through the right side driving in Jared Vuz (Blairstown, NJ).
Bauer finished 3-for-5 on the game. Jelloian was 1-for-4 scoring once and driving in another. Ryan was 1-for-5 with a run scored and Goodman was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Whittier has the week off to recover before traveling to take on Hope International on the road under the lights on Monday, February 17 beginning at 6:00pm.
