WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team has found their stride following a lopsided 9-1 victory over Chapman University Friday afternoon that opened up a three-game series.
The Purple & Gold have now won two straight and improve to 5-7, 2-2 SCIAC, while Chapman drops to 5-9, 4-6 SCIAC.
The difference in the game came in the first two innings where WC put up six runs on seven hits. Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) and Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) started the game off with singles and then came in on an error by the shortstop and a suicide squeeze. Hannah Angileri (San Jose, Calif.) then capped off the rally with a single up the middle that scored Martinez.
In the 2nd, the Poets put together a two-out rally. Ashlei Sanchez (San Dimas, Calif.) started the frame off getting hit a pitch and was followed by a MaGee single into left field. After a Chapman pitching change Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) came up with a single on the infield and Yolanda Oregel (Anaheim, Calif.) brought in the sixth run of the game with a single through the left side. After a scoreless 3rd the Poets tacked on another two in the 4th following a two-run shot to center from MaGee. Chapman rallied in the 5th with two-outs bringing across their only run of the game with Lauwers singling to left center.
But despite extending the game it wouldn't be enough as pinch hitter Sammy Corona (San Dimas, Calif.) would come up clutch with a two-out double to right center that scored Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) all the way from first base.
Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) threw well for the Purple & Gold collecting the win going 4.0 Innings giving up just five hits. MaGee was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with three runs scored and two RBI's. Oregel was 1-for-2 with two runs batted in and Ha was 1-for-2 coming across twice.
Whittier wraps up the three-game series with Chapman University today, Saturday, March 7 with game times set for 12pm and 2pm.
