Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. (Sept. 29, 2021) – Junior goalkeeper Teddy Nickerson (Seattle, Wash. / O'Dea) of the Whittier College men's soccer team got in the way of five shots when the Poets took on SCIAC leader Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges(7-1-1, 5-0 SCIAC) on Wednesday night.
Three of Nickerson's saves came in the second half when the Stags' offense began to find their form. Freshman keeper Mario Floriano (Anaheim, Calif. / Servite) spelled Nickerson for the game's final 17 minutes, accruing his first bit of action so far this season. Collectively, the Poets played their best soccer in the first half when they outshot CMS 9-5 and showed a consistent ability to pressure the host Stags throughout the full 90 minutes. Nickerson' O'Dea teammate Banks Telkamp (Seattle, Wash. / O'Dea), the reigning SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week, stuck two of his three shots on net, both of which came within the first 13 minutes of the game. Four other players joined Telkamp in putting shots on net. Additionally, the Poets finished the game with six corner kick tries, a testament to their ability to challenge the home team on the offensive end.
Head Coach Shea Harwell and the Poets will look to get back on the winning track when they host SCIAC foe No. 23 University of Redlands (5-1-1, 3-1-1 SCIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
