Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2022) - Freshman Rowan Slater scored his first two collegiate goals, and Lawrence Dydell tallied a goal and two assists, leading Whittier to a 3-1 road victory Wednesday night at Caltech.
"It came down to me being in the right place at the right time," Slater said of his 57th minute goal, which tied the match at one. "After our cross was deflected, it came to me and I put it away."
Slater's next goal, which proved to be the game-winner, occurred in the 81st minute.
"I saw Larry (Dydell) get the ball played to him, and I looked to run off of him," Slater said of the setup for his game-winning goal. "Once Larry played me the ball, I took one touch past a defender and hit it in with my left foot."
Slater, who joined the team from Poudre High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, has enjoyed his time with Whittier so far.
"All the guys are great to be around and support one another," said Slater. "We have been working hard every day as a team, and although some results haven't went our way, I am thankful that I've been able to come into the program and help contribute. I'm looking forward to riding this high into our game Saturday vs. Redlands and then going on to hopefully make the playoffs."
Senior goalkeeper Teddy Nickerson made four saves, earning his second win of the season and 17th of his college career. Dydell's two assists were the first of his season.
The three Whittier goals marked the team's game high this season. Men's soccer next hosts Redlands Saturday night at 7 p.m.
