WHITTIER, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2022) – Senior Mike Hernandez (Stockton, Calif. / Edison) of the Whittier College baseball team provided the Poets a bright spot during Sunday's non-conference baseball game with the University of La Verne.
Hernandez hit back-to-back doubles, one into left center field and one into right center field during his time as the designated hitter in Sunday's game. Both balls were wellvhit, with the latter shot into right-center reaching the wall. Hernandez was not the only Poet with multiple hits, however, as freshman Abe Bullard (Paynesville, Minn. / Paynesville) stepped up in relief at third base to provide the Poets with a pair of late-game opportunities. Relief pitcher Andrew Chavez (West Covina, Calif. / South Hills) and Marcos Armenta (Bellflower, Calif. / Gahr) delivered clean innings of relief for the Poets, facing one of the SCIAC's top offensive teams.
Head Coach Mike Rizzo and the Poets will have a chance to right the ship in conference play as soon as next weekend when they travel to Occidental College first on Friday, Feb. 24 before hosting the Tigers for a Saturday doubleheader the next day beginning at 11 a.m.
