LA VERNE, Calif. (Mar. 11, 2022) – Senior third baseman Jared Vuz (Blairstown, N.J. / North Warren Regional) of the Whittier College baseball team led the Poets in putting up six runs against the University of La Verne on Friday, a marked improvement from the team's previous meeting with the Leopards.
Vuz doubled twice and was responsible for a pair of Poet runs when he knocked in sophomore Cam Gray and freshman Maximus Berber (Riverside, Calif. / Ramona) in the sixth inning, which proved to be far and away the Poets' best offensive inning. Vuz's bases-clearing double came in the middle of a pair of base knocks from Berber and senior outfielder James Stirton (Cerritos, Calif. / Valley Christian), who knocked home Vuz with a single into right field. Earlier in the inning, senior catcher Mike Hernandez (Stockton, Calif. / Edison), who joined Vuz as the only Poets with multiple hits, scored on a fielding error from the Leopards' third baseman to kick off the Poets' five-run inning, the visitors' most successful of the game against a tough La Verne roster.
Head Coach Mike Rizzo and the Poets will have another non-conference game against a SCIAC opponent when they host Chapman University on Thursday, Mar. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
