WHITTIER, CA. (OCT. 18, 2023)- The men's Whittier College soccer team played host to Clarmont-Mudd-Scripps in a Wednesday night SCIAC matchup. After dropping the first game of the season to the Stags, the Poets were looking to make this match closer. In the end, Whittier's defense played with a great tenacity but CMS was able to secure a 3-0 victory.
The first half began and Whittier was looking to stay with the high tempo CMS offense. The Poets were doing a great job on both sides of the field; stopping scoring chances by the Stags then making their own pushes on the offensive side. Then in the 18th minute CMS broke away on one and netted their first goal of the game. The two teams battled for the next 20 minutes, not letting either get a good look at the goal. However, in the 42 minute the Stags were able to score one more goal to take a 2-0 lead into the half.
After playing a hard-fought first half, Whittier was not going to just back down and came out fierce in the second. The Stags, however, did too and in the 59th minute scored their 3rd goal on the Poets. The last 30 minutes of the game consisted of tough physical play by both teams. Neither team was able to get a true good look at the goal and the final score would end up being 3-0.
Breckon Robirds and Anthony Chavoya both played well in the goal tonight for Whittier, as they would walk away with a total of 8 saves. The Poets will look to bounce back this Saturday as they travel to Los Angeles to take on Occidental. The Poets and Tigers will kick off at 4:00.
