Whittier Dominates Caltech in SCIAC Match

PASADENA, CA. (OCT. 21, 2023)- The Poets took on the Caltech Beavers today in a SCIAC battle. With the season clock ticking down, Whittier was looking to help strengthen their case with a win. The girls came out and did just that dominating the Beavers 3 sets to none. 

Set 1:

In the first set, the two teams came out ready to battle and went back and forth for the first few points. Then with a 8-7 lead, the Poets went on a massive run. Whittier was able to score 7 consecutive points thanks to the amazing serving by libero Nadine Oronoz (Whittier, Calif., Rio Hondo College). Oronoz had 3 service aces through this 7 point run. The Poets were now up 15-7, but the Beavers were not going away. Caltech would bring the score to 19-13 at one point; however, this would be as close as the Beavers got as the Poets held on to win the set 25-14. 

Set 2:

The second set replayed a similar set to the first. The teams came out early and went back and forth trading leads, but Whittier would once again turn it up the second part of the of the set. With a 12-9 lead, the Poets went on their first big run of this set making the lead 16-9 at the end. Whittier would then go on to end the set on a 12-3 run, to bring the final score to 25-13. 

Set 3: 
The third set was a must win for Caltech and the Beavers came out on the attack. They would start the set on a 6-0 run, but the Poets answered back with a 6 point run of their own. The score was tied 6-6 after both runs. The Poets would continue their excellent play and communication in this final set. There were a total of 5 service aces in this set alone. Whittier would end this match by taking this third set 25-17.

The girls dominated today, ultimately beating the Beavers 75-44. Sofia Zazueta (La Mirada, Calif., Orange Lutheran HS) would lead all players with a total of 10 kills and a .385 kill percentage.While Oronoz would lead all players with 5 service aces. Another thing to note was the Poets only had a total of 11 hitting errors this match. Whittier will look to continue this hot play as they host the Chapman Panthers on Tuesday night. This SCIAC match will begin at 7:00.
