Muro Scores 2 Against Sagehens

WHITTIER, CA. (Nov. 1, 2023)- The Purple and Gold played host to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens Wednesday night. The Poets never quit throughout this match and would end up having their best period in the 4th. The Sagehens though came out and were on a tear; they would defeat the Poets by a final score of 21-5.

The Sagehens would get off to a very fast start during this matchup, as they were able to go up on the Poets 7-0 in the first period. Pomona would then come out in the second and score 2 more goals until Whittier answered back. Andrew Muro (Whittier, Calif., La Serna HS ), with about 4 minutes left in the second, would set himself up nicely and fired a shot past the Sagehens goalie.

Starting the second half, the Sagehens were up 13-1 on the Poets. However, it was Whittier who was able to scratch first in this final half. Dylan Zeledon (Orlando, Fla., Apopka HS), would work his way through the Sagehens defense and fired a ball past their goalie to score the first goal of this half. Pomona would answer this early Whittier goal with a run of their own. At the end of the third the Sagehens were up 15-2 on the Poets.

The final period would prove to be the best for Whittier. After Pomona-Pitzer scored three early goals in the period, Muro was able to take advantage of a Whittier power-play and scored his 2nd goal of the game. This goal would start a string of Poets attacks. Julien Breck (Norwalk, Calif., La Serna HS) and Nick Coltrin (Livermore, Calif., Granada HS) got in on the scoring action, as both of them netted their first goals of the game in this final period. As the final whistle blew, the Sagehens would end up winning 21-5.

The Poets played much in this second half of the game and will look to carry that over to their next game. They will host the Caltech Beavers this Saturday in their final home match up of the year at 11:00. Make sure to come out and support your Poets and graduating seniors as we celebrate their final home match of their careers.
