Garvey and Palos Star in Williams Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WHITTIER, Calif. (March 27, 2023) - Whittier split Monday's doubleheader with visiting Williams College of Massachusetts, as senior Jamie Garvey and sophomore Maya Palos were the Poets' stars of the day.

GAME ONE:

Garvey was outstanding in Game One, hurling a complete game with 12 strikeouts and allowing zero earned runs (one unearned in the seventh with two outs) and two hits. She tossed four consecutive 1-2-3 innings (third through sixth), leading the Poets to a 3-1 victory and capturing her sixth win of the year.

Whittier jumped on opposing star pitcher, Sadie Leonard, who entered having only allowed five hits in 21 innings with 30 strikeouts. Senior Jocelyn Signoretti doubled to left-center, scoring Palos to give the Poets a 1-0 lead in the first innning.

The Poets scored next in the following inning, an unearned run that crossed after a throwing error by the pitcher on a textbook sacrifice bunt by junior Heaven Wolf.

Whittier's third and final run also scored on a Wolf bunt, this time a single to the first baseman in the sixth inning.

The Poet offense spread its hits around, with seven different hitters each recording one hit in the contest. Also, no Whittier played scored more than one run or had more than one RBI.

GAME TWO:

Freshman Bella Peinado made her first career start in Game Two, pitching 3 1/3 innings and ultimately earning a no decision in the 6-4 loss.

The Poets again took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, this time on a fielding error by the third baseman that scored Palos.

The Ephs then scored three runs on five hits and one walk in the top of the second, assuming a two-run lead. Peinado did well to limit the damage, stranding runners on all three bases.

Junior Marissa Flynn drove in Palos to cut the deficit to one with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.

In the fourth, Whittier went ahead, 4-3. Sophomore speedster Sara Luna drove in the first run of the inning with a triple to right-center, scoring junior Sara Chiala.

Then, with two outs and Luna still on third base, Palos drove her in to give the Poets the lead with the first baseman's second hit of the game, an RBI single to right field.

In the top of the sixth, a long three-run home run to left-center field put the Ephs ahead 6-4, which ended up being the final score.

Palos recorded her third hit of the contest in the sixth, reaching base in all four plate appearances in Game Two and scoring two runs in the game.
