WHITTIER, Calif. (April 1, 2023) - Whittier completed an important SCIAC sweep of the La Verne Leopards by winning both games at home Saturday.

GAME ONE:

Senior Katelyn Calvetti put forth her best performance of the season Saturday, throwing six innings and allowing zero earned runs. She issued just one walk, pounding the strike zone all game. She struck out and allowed just five hits.

The Poets pounced on the Leopards first, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by senior Kelly Monroy.

Sophmore Maya Palos then made it 3-0 with a two-run double to left-center.

La Verne scored an unearned run in the fourth to cut its deficit to 3-1, but freshman Lucy Brooks restored the Poets' three-run advantage with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half.

In the sixth, the Leopards scored a run, but Calvetti returned to the circle with two down and was able to get the final out without allowing La Verne to creep closer.

Brooks, junior Lindsey Perry and sophomore Sara Luna each stole a base in Game One.

GAME TWO:

Freshman Bella Peinado captured her first collegiate victory with an outstanding complete game, as Whittier beat La Verne, 7-2. Peinado allowed only five hits, two runs, one walk and a hit batter.

"Pitching today was amazing," Peinado said. "Getting my first collegiate win felt great, especially since it gave us the sweep of La Verne, a big accomplishment that shows what we're capable of. Pitching a complete game was very exciting. I felt like I really proved myself today in the circle.

Peinado allowed a run in the first inning, but Whittier promptly tied the game in the bottom half with an RBI single by sophomore Andrea Maushardt.

In the third inning, La Verne reclaimed a one-run lead, but again, the lead was short-lived.

In the bottom of the third, Whittier scored five unearned runs to jump out to a comorftable four-run lead. Maushardt started the scoring spree with an RBI double, Luna then knocked in a run with a groundout and junior Heaven Wolf brought in two scores with a single. Perry then crushed a deep drive to centerfield that was dropped, allowing another run to score.

In the fourth, the Poets tacked on the final run of the contest when junior Marissa Flynn drove in Monroy with a single through the right side.

Whittier scored seven runs on 10 hits, led by Monroy, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. On Saturday, the senior was 5-for-6 with four doubles and three runs. Wolf also had a productive day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

Maushardt, Wolf and Palos each recorded two hits in the game.
