Box Score WHITTIER/CLAREMONT, Calif. (April 21-22, 2023) - The Poets took two of three from the Sagehens in a series with playoff implications. Whittier now has the fourth and final spot in the SCIAC tournament with two series remaining for each team. Both squads have a 9-6 conference record, with the Poets holding the tiebreaker by virtue of their series win this weekend.
GAME ONE - Friday, April 21 at Whittier
Whittier was trailing 4-0 and did not have a single hit until the sixth inning...when everything shifted! Sophomore Sara Luna led off the inning with an infield single .
Two batters later, junior Heaven Wolf drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
Next, junior Emily Adkison tied the game with a home run over the left-field fence.
Then, in the seventh inning, junior Lindsey Perry ended the game with a perfectly-placed walkoff single that fell between the third baseman, left fielder and shortstop.
Luna and freshman Lucy Brooks each stole a base, and junior Andrea Maushardt recorded a sacrifice bunt.
Senior Jamie Garvey tallied her tenth win of the season with the complete game, striking out six.
GAME TWO - Saturday, April 22 at Pomona-Pitzer
Game Two of the series was another back-and-forth contest between worthy adversaries.
Junior Marissa Flynn opened the scoring with solo shot to start the second inning.
The Sagehens then scored twice on a two-run blast by Kylie Liu in the third.
Brooks evened the score at two in the sixth inning with an RBI single to right-center.
In the top of the eighth, Adkison connected again, giving the Poets a 3-2 lead with a home run.
Pomona-Pitzer got a runner in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the eighth but could not score, as Whittier took the first two games of the series.
Adkison went 3-for-4 with two runs, Luna was 2-for-3 and senior Katelyn Calvetti was outstanding the circle.
Calvetti pitched eight innings with seven strikeouts and no walks, allowing seven hits and just two runs.
Junior Sara Chiala doubled in the game, and Adkison and Luna each stole a base.
GAME THREE - Saturday, April 22 at Pomona-Pitzer
The Sagehens won 8-0 in five innings in the second game of the day.
Senior Jocleyn Signoretti, sophomore Maya Palos and Luna each singled in the game
Up next for Whittier is a three-game series against the Chapman Panthers, beginning Saturday on the road at 2 p.m. The series has playoff implications, with Chapman currently tied for second (second with its tiebreaker over Redlands) and Whittier tied for fourth (fourth with its tiebreaker over Pomona-Pitzer).
