Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. (April 7, 2023) - Reigning SCIAC Pitcher of the Week Jamie Garvey recorded her third consecutive complete game two-hit victory Friday, and junior Lindsey Perry ended the game, 8-0, with a line drive over the left-field fence in the sixth inning.
Garvey pitched six innings, allowing no runs and striking out seven, while walking two. She now ranks first in Ks, second in wins after tallying her eighth and fifth in ERA.
The Poets scored once in each of the first two innings, with the first run crossing on an RBI single by senior Kelly Monroy, who went 3-for-3 in the game. The La Puente native has now recorded hits in 10 of her last 12 at-bats and is up to .373 this season after struggling out of the gate.
Whittier's second run scored after sophomore Sara Luna singled to center, stole second and then went all the way home on the play as result of two errors. That speed, though!
The next runs came in the fifth inning when the Poets scored five, including one on an RBI double by sophomore Maya Palos, another on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Andrea Maushardt and a third on a run-scoring single to center by senior Melissa Carrasco.
After a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, the Poets needed just one run to put the mercy rule into effect, thereby ending the game.
Perry, leading off the inning, wasted little time doing just that with a hard-hit home run to left field to end the game. The second baseman went 2-for-4 with two runs in the contest and now has eight mult-hit efforts this season, the most on the team.
Monroy and freshman Bella Peinado each stole a base in the game, and no Poet struck out Friday.
With the Poets' win and Redlands' loss Friday, Whittier moves into fourth place in the SCIAC.
Whittier will play a Saturday road doubleheader at Occidental College.
