GAME ONE:
Katelyn Calvetti recorded her sixth win of the season in the first game of the day, pitching a complete game. The senior allowed just five hits and one unearned run while striking out four.
Junior first baseman Emily Adkison drove in all three of the Poets' runs and tallied half of their eight hits, going 4-for-4 with two doubles. She is now tied for second in the conference in doubles with teammate senior Kelly Monroy. Adkison ranks third in slugging percentage and is tied for third in home runs and for fifth in RBI.
Freshman Lucy Brooks scored two runs in the contest and stole a base, while sophomore Sara Luna stole two bases and junior Heaven Wolf swiped one.
Whittier scored the first runs of the game in the third inning on a two-run double by Adkison.
Occidental responded in the fourth on a two-out error by the Poets, scoring its first run of the day.
Whittier tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI infield single by Adkison with two outs, but the Tigers would not score again.
Right fielder junior Sara Chiala ended the bottom of the sixth by catching a fly ball and then doubling off the runner at first base, and Calvetti pitched a perfect seventh to deliver a 3-1 victory for the Poets.
GAME TWO:
Freshman Bella Peinado won her second consecutive start, improving to a immaculate 2-0. She tossed five scoreless innings and allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out a career-high three.
Offensively, the star of the game was senior Gysselle Soto, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. The San Fernando native's two-run double in the fourth extended the Poets' lead to 3-0.
Two batters earlier, sophomore Maya Palos opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Poets stole five bases and were not caught in Game Two. Juniors Amanda Diaz and Kaylie Cervantes each recorded their first career collegiate stolen bases, and Diaz stole two. Wolf and Brooks also each stole a base in the contest.
Reigning SCIAC Pitcher of the Week Jamie Garvey came into pitch in the sixth with the bases loaded and the score 3-1. After she walked the first two batters she faced, allowing an inherited runner to score and cut the lead to 3-2, the hard-throwing righty got the next two batters to pop out to end the inning.
Garvey earned her second save of the season by pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Whittier's next series will come against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, beginning Friday on the road (3 p.m.). The Poets and Athenas are currently tied for third place in the SCIAC with matching 6-3 records.
