WHITTIER, CA. (Sep. 23, 2023)- The Whittier Poets continued SCIAC play Saturday night, taking on the Claremont Mudd-Scripps Athenas. In this low-scoring affair, the Poets continued to fire shots at the Athenas goalie but nothing would get past her. CMS was also not able to get much going for them, however 1 goal made a difference in this game. In the first half CMS was able to find the back of the net and they would hold on to win this game 1-0.
In the first half, the Poets came out ready to play and continued to shoot at the CMS goal. The girls had a few opportunities that looked promising, but none would end with a goal. Then in the 27th minute the Athenas got their chance when a ball bounced off the post directly into the foot of another player. They took advantage of this positioning and were able to get one past the Poets goalie. CMS would hold this lead through the end of the first half and carry it to halftime.
The second half began and the Athenas were looking to extend their lead. They came out very quickly and took shot after shot at the Poets goalie, but the combination of good goalie play and solid defense forced the Athenas to take bad shots. Despite being down, Whittier was not ready to give up and showed off their solid defensive communication. The Poets continued to take shots at the Athenas goalie, but none of their kicks were flying in their direction today. The second half would see no goals by either team and the final score would be 1-0.
The girls played hard throughout the game, but it would not end in their favor. Whittier put up a great 11 shots on goal tonight and they will look to continue to get these opportunities in their future contests. Their next chance to get back in the win column will come next week against CalTeach. The Poets will travel to Pasadena to take on the Beavers at 4:00 on Wednesday (Sep. 27, 2023).
