DeGroot Dominates at Caltech

The senior put on her best performance of the season in Pasadena

PASADENA, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2024) – Senior outside hitter Riley DeGroot (Ontario, Calif. / Ontario Christian / Mt. San Antonio College) of the Whittier College women's volleyball team took the lead offensive and put forth a dominant game at Caltech to earn the Poets their fourth SCIAC victory of the season.

DeGroot diced the Beavers for 12 kills in a three-set sweep. Collectively, the Poets finished each frame with no worse than a .200 hitting percentage overwhelmed the host Beavers as the bigger, more athletic team. As for DeGroot, the senior managed to maintain a consistent level of offensive output throughout the match with four kills in the first set, three in the second and five in the third. Whittier won the match 25-14, 25-19, 25-12.

The senior outside hitter was not the only Poet to impress in Pasadena. Senior Analise Kusleika (Upland, Calif. / Claremont) had seven kills on 18 total attacks without committing a single error, leading to a pristine .389 hitting percentage. The efficiency carried over in the middle with freshman Emlia Graham (Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa / Cal State Monterey Bay) adding seven kills without a single error. on just 11 attacks. As a team, the Poets had a 45:12 kill-error ratio, their best of the year. Additionally, no player had more than four errors over the three-set match. There were, however, several long rallies resulting in three different Poets finishing with at least 14 digs. Chief among them were DeGroot, senior libero Nadine Oronoz (Whittier, Calif. / Southland Christian / Rio Hondo College) and junior setter Morgan Lin (Glendora, Calif. / Glendora), who also led with 21 assists.

Additionally, Whittier posted one of its most dominant lines at the net, outblocking Caltech at a 3:1 ratio.

Head Coach Chris Duarte-McDemott and the Poets will enjoy a weekend of rest from SCIAC action, as well as a week of rest before returning on Saturday, Oct. 19 against Chapman University and Depauw University.
