LA VERNE, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2024) – The Whittier College volleyball team came up short at the University of La Verne to end the season on Friday, but the players now know their fate for the 2024 SCIAC Postseason Tournament: they will head back to La Verne to rematch the Leopards on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
Both teams now hold a pair of straight-sets victories over the other, and while the Poets came up short on Saturday, there will be plenty to build on heading into the rematch with La Verne. Freshman
Malena The (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills / Westmont College), a player who has stepped up consistently on the outside for the Poets all season long, had her eighth game with double-digit kills. Meanwhile, senior setter
Morgan Lin (Glendora, Calif. / Glendora), another significant bright spot for the Poets this season, led the team in digs (9), assists (15) and service aces (2). She, along with setting partner
Sophia Padilla (Fontana, Calif. / St. Lucy's), figure to be crucial to whether or not the third-seeded Poets are able to advance to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament finals on Saturday, where one of three different SCIAC rivals will be waiting.
Senior
Riley DeGroot (Ontario, Calif. / Ontario Christian / Mt. San Antonio College) also had some success on the outside with eight kills.
The Poets officially qualified for the SCIAC Postseason Tournament last weekend. Now, they finish the 2024 season with 11 conference wins, which ties last season's program-record total. However, this season they've drawn the No. 3 seed, which, with the new postseason format, will salvage the idea of a three-game path to the championship.
