WHITTTIER, CA. (Mar. 20, 2024)- The Whittier College Lady Poets took on the CMS Athenas in a SCIAC matchup Wednesday night. The Poets started the game off well, scoring two goals in the first period. However, the Athenas were able to pull away with their deep bench and the final score would end up being 17-5.
As the game began CMS was able to come out and score 2 goals in the first 90 seconds. Haley Kivett (Beaverton, Ore., Southridge HS) answered with her first goal of the game about 20 seconds later. After the Athenas scored their third goal, Jaycee Morris (Lake Elsinore, Calif., Temescal Canyon HS) fired one past the opponents goalie to bring the score to 3-2. By the end of the first period though CMS re-upped their advantage, as the score was 5-2.Â
In the second period, the Athenas pulled away in this game. Scoring 6 unanswered goals and going into halftime with an 11-2 lead.Â
Starting the second half the Whittier defense was better, as they only allowed 3 goals. In the final minute of the third Emily Flores (Newbury Park, Calif., Newbury Park) got in on the scoring and earned her first goal of the game.Â
Heading to the final quarter, CMS had a 14-3 lead. Once again the Poets held the Athenas in check on the defensive side, only giving up 3 goals. In this final period, Morris scored her second of the game and in the final minute Alexandra Haluska (Brea, Calif., Brea Olinda HS, Fullerton College) netted her first.Â
The final score of this game would be 17-5, CMS. Whittier will be back in action on Saturday the 23rd. As they travel to Redlands to take on the Bulldogs at 11:00.
