WHITTIER, Calif. (Apr. 12, 2025) – The Whittier College softball team took on the California Lutheran University Regals for this weekend's SCIAC series. The Poets had a tough go of things, but got some key offense in the form of home runs from senior middle infielders
Arianna Salazar (San Diego, Calif. / Clairemont / University of Saint Katherine | San Diego Mesa College) and
Kelly Nutter (Carlsbad, Calif. / La Costa Canyon / Cal State San Marcos | Palomar College).
Game 1: Cal Lutheran 9, Whittier 3
The first game saw both teams start fast with seven combined runs between the first two innings. Whittier's big inning came in the second, when freshman catcher
Mariah Rodriguez (Barstow, Calif. / Barstow) got things started with a leadoff double. Rodriguez, along with senior third baseman
Alyssa Bolden (Santee, Calif. / Grossmont / University of Saint Katherine), both scored thanks to an RBI double from Salazar in the right center field. Salazar, herself, would score on a sacrifice fly, and while the Poets did put up all three of their runs in this frame, the Purple & Gold were likely one more hit away from really breaking things open.
From there, the Poets would have to deal with the power of the Regals, cycling through a season-high five different pitchers. Of the five, freshman
Maya Torres stood out, holding the Regals scoreless over 1.2 innings of work while allowing just three baserunners.
Game 2: Cal Lutheran 7, Whittier 2
Home runs bookended the Poets offense in the second game of the doubleheader, with Nutter's coming in the first inning and Salazar's coming in the final inning. The two players combined for five of the Poets' eight hits for the game.
Head Coach
Terry Schweikert and the Poets are still in search of their first SCIAC series win of the season. Their next opportunity will come next week when they take on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Athenas.
