PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier Poets traveled to Pasadena on Wednesday to take on the Caltech Beavers and came away with a 2-0 victory behind a pair of second-half goals from Vivian Martinez and Annabelle Allison.
Both squads opened the match with strong defensive efforts, as Whittier held off the Beavers' first two scoring attempts within the opening 16 minutes.
Midway through the first half, Aleena Galvan recorded the Poets' first shot on goal, but her attempt was turned away by the Caltech goalkeeper.
Whittier began to find its offensive rhythm as Lauren Young tested the Beavers' keeper with another shot on target but was also denied.
The Poets continued to apply pressure, earning four corner kicks within five minutes as they searched for the opening goal.
Despite Whittier's growing offensive momentum, the teams entered halftime in a scoreless tie.
The second half began with Allison immediately challenging the Caltech goalkeeper, firing a shot on goal that was saved.
As the Poets continued to build momentum, Martinez broke through with a strike that sailed past the Beavers' keeper and into the net. The goal marked her first of the season and gave Whittier a 1-0 advantage.
Whittier maintained its attacking presence following the breakthrough, generating two more shots as the Beavers struggled to contain the Poets' offense.

Allison stepped up to take the penalty and calmly converted, recording her second goal of the season and doubling the Poets' advantage to 2-0.
With a two-goal cushion, Whittier's defense remained composed, limiting the Beavers' opportunities and protecting the shutout throughout the closing minutes.
The final whistle sounded with the Poets securing a 2-0 road victory.
Whittier controlled the offensive battle, outshooting Caltech 19-5. Goalkeeper Sofia Lopez delivered another impressive performance, recording three saves on three shots on goal to preserve the clean sheet.
