CLAREMONT, Calif. – Whittier women's soccer traveled to Claremont on Saturday to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. Mia Cordova netted the Poets' first SCIAC goal of the season as Whittier fell, 5-1.
Sofia Lopez recorded her first save of the match in the ninth minute, but the Sagehens would not be denied less than a minute later, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Lopez made two more stops, but five minutes after their opening goal, Pomona-Pitzer doubled its advantage to 2-0.
Lauren Young forced a save moments later as she looked to cut into Whittier's deficit. Pomona-Pitzer then found its third goal of the half in the 21st minute.
The Sagehens added goals in the 32nd and 41st minutes to take a 5-0 advantage into halftime.
Whittier fought back in the second half and became the aggressor, recording six shots, putting three on target and eventually finding the back of the net.
Nena Resendiz Saldiva took the Poets' first attempt of the half before Victoria Martinez placed a shot toward the top-left corner, but it was denied.
Annabelle Allison kept the pressure on with another shot on frame and earned a corner kick for Whittier. Adina Johnson swung the ensuing corner into the box, and Cordova collected the rebound before battling the ball into the net to cut the Sagehens' advantage to 5-1.
The Poets will look to regroup as they head to Thousand Oaks to take on the Cal Lutheran Regals on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. Catch all the action on FloCollege.
